Dangerous animals, a classification with some surprises
Our TOP 10 dangerous animals is not here to scare you, but rather to tell you to be careful depending on the countries you are in.
It is also an opportunity to remove false ideas, such as the fact that the shark is a great killer of humans.
It’s one of the scariest animals, thank you Spielberg! We are on the verge of being afraid of dinosaurs too…
To be more serious, you will be able to find few of these dangerous animals in France, so don’t panic.
TOP 10 dangerous animals. The hippopotamus
Deaths per year: 500
It’s not the most scary dangerous animal, and yet, if you go to Africa, it’s one of the main ones to watch out for. The hippopotamus is a very territorial animal. If you enter his domain, you risk being charged.
The majority of hippopotamus attacks occur in water. If you don’t have an eye, you don’t have to see them well. Indeed, in the water, we only see their ears and eyes. If a hippo grabs you in the water, it will already be too late, the fault of its incredible jaw.
It is not uncommon to see crocodiles crushed by the jaws of these imposing mammals.
No doubt, the hippopotamus is one of the main dangerous animals in Africa!
TOP 9 dangerous animals. The crocodile
Deaths per year: 2,000
Clearly, between the hippopotamus and the crocodile, it is not a good idea to get too close to marshy areas or water sources.
Unlike its predecessor, the crocodile is a dangerous animal not because it is territorial, but because it is hungry.
There is little risk of being attacked if he has just eaten and you maintain a safe distance of a few meters (although it is best never to approach).
The risk of being attacked? On land as in water, the crocodile is an animal that moves very quickly, leaving very little chance of escape. You will be reminded that its jaw applies a force of approximately 22,000 newtons, 3 times that of a white shark…
TOP 8 dangerous animals. The Scorpion
Deaths per year: 3,000
There are dozens of species of scorpions, some much more venomous. Top 3 most dangerous scorpions:
- The Indian red scorpion. It is mainly found in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
- The “deadly prowler.” It is mainly found in North Africa and the Middle East.
- The thick-tailed scorpion. He’s almost everywhere. Maghreb, Asia, Africa, Middle East and India.
As you certainly know, it is with their tail that they sting you and inject you with their venom. Generally, scorpions are quite timid; noise drives them away. In addition, they mainly come out at night because they do not like the heat and prefer the humidity of the stones for example.
TOP 7 dangerous animals. The Tsetse fly
Deaths per year: 10,000
This fly can cause a lot of damage! It is one of the dangerous animals because it bites (it’s painful) to drink your blood, and can transmit a deadly parasite to you: Trypanosoma Brucei. This disease is called sleeping sickness.
It is all the more dangerous since no vaccine or treatment exists if the disease has had time to spread.
Tsetse flies are mainly found in Sub-Saharan Africa.
TOP 6 dangerous animals. The reduves
Deaths per year: 13,000
Another insect responsible for many deaths. The insect is a type of bug that eats other insects. Until then, you will tell me that everything is fine.
If the reduve (which comes from the Latin reduviae meaning “skin”) is in our top dangerous animals, it is because its droppings can cause Chagas disease in humans.
NO! Chagas doesn’t just attack Shagas! It is a fatal disease if not treated in time.
TOP 5 dangerous animals. The dog
Deaths per year: 25,000
We will immediately reassure you and reconcile you by showing you too cute dogs.
The dog is and always will be man’s best friend. A dog is not dangerous in the same way as a hippopotamus or a crocodile, it is very rare that it attacks you to kill you.
What causes thousands of deaths is rabies. It may seem surprising in France, because we have had a vaccine since Pasteur’s famous work, but in many regions of the world, rabies has still not been eradicated.
Dogs are not the only ones that can transmit rabies, but the majority of cases come from these animals.
TOP 4 dangerous animals. The freshwater snail
Deaths per year: 50,000
A simple freshwater snail? Yes but how? We always tend to believe that we are going to be devoured, that we are going to be attacked with force. In our top dangerous animals, you notice that danger does not necessarily come from where we think it does!
There is no risk that the snail will jump down your throat, rest assured. On the other hand, the snail can transmit Schistosoma Mansoni. This infection is responsible for intestinal schistosomiasis which in humans can be fatal if left untreated.
Note, however, that 83 million people per year are infected, mainly in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
TOP 3 dangerous animals. Lumbricoides roundworm
Deaths per year: 60,000
Another dangerous animal that we cannot suspect. This worm spreads the disease ascariasis (human only), which is contracted through water or poor hygiene.
This worm mainly grows in tropical and subtropical areas. It can also affect animals, even if it is another species of worm, and also be transmitted to humans.
It’s not very appetizing, but the worm ingests itself in the form of (very small) eggs. After ingestion, the larvae will hatch and develop in the intestinal mucosa then in the lungs, the alveolar walls and finally the intestine.
A dirty creature which unfortunately has its place in our top dangerous animals!
TOP 2 dangerous animals. The snakes
Deaths per year: 100,000
This is a dangerous animal that we can come across in our countryside or in the forest! We reassure you, with us, you can at worst come across a viper. If it bites you, you will have, depending on the location of the bite, between 2 hours and 5 hours to find a hospital that will treat you urgently.
But in some countries, snakes are much more venomous, and hospitals are too far away or poorly equipped. This is the case throughout the African continent, in the Middle East, South America, in all deserts and some tropical countries.
If, however, one day you unfortunately happen to be bitten, try to keep your cool, catch (or kill if necessary) the snake, and go to a hospital. You can then show which snake bit you,
and immediately be taken care of correctly.
TOP 1 dangerous animals. Mosquitoes
Deaths per year: 2 Million.
Who would have thought that the mosquito would be first in our ranking of dangerous animals? This creature hated by all carries malaria, a disease which is directly transmitted to humans by mosquito bites. There are more than 600,000 deaths linked to malaria alone, unfortunately mainly in African countries.
This mosquito filth also spreads yellow fever, dengue or chikungunya. It is one of the insects that has no valid reason to live; in short, it serves no purpose other than destroying lives. Google has launched a program for several years, ultimately aiming to eradicate all species of mosquitoes.
First tied, Man
Without going into philosophical subjects, isn’t Man the most dangerous animal? He is not only destroying his species, but is also killing many animal species…
If we continue like this, we will also end up perishing by our own hand.
Is Man a wolf to Man? Antithesis thesis? No, but we’re getting closer and closer.
Some figures, just for France, from the wwf.fr site:
- 26% of bird species are threatened
- 1 in 10 mammals are in danger
- 168 animal species are endangered
