The Reunion Island has a tropical climate and is known for its beautiful beaches, its fine sand, its high temperature for a good part of the year (330 days/year). But it has many more secrets and treasures that we absolutely must highlight.
10. The Rum Saga
The warm tropical drink.
What’s better than a good little rum to get into the Reunion atmosphere. At the Rhum Saga we learn a lot about the making of artisanal rum while going through the history of Reunion Island. The visit takes us back in history with the mill and short historical films as well as a visit to the smallest distillery on Reunion Island, in operation since 1845.
At the end of the visit, you are entitled to the tasting of several rums arranged with flavors, each more delicious than the other. We can leave with a tasty little souvenir by going to the “p’tit’ boutik’”… So, let’s go have a drink!
To be consumed in moderation of course! 🙂
9. Buggy Excursions
On the way !
This is an original way to discover the landscapes of the southwest of Reunion Island via the famous tamarind route and reach the heights of the island. From €139/2-seater buggy, you can make your way on private trails and live a unique experience. But don’t panic, you can also experience it as a family thanks to the family buggies that can accommodate up to 6 people.
Let’s gooooo!!
8. Visit to the Cirque de Cilaos
Let’s take a trip to the heights!
Reunion Island is not just about the sea and fine, warm sand! There is much to discover in its heights. About 2 hours drive from Saint-Denis, the capital, we discover beautiful, typically Creole huts BUT NOT THAT! …. The Cirque de Cilaos is also known for its superior quality lentils but also for its wine with a very sweet taste, a wine that you can of course taste and buy on site.
But BE CAREFUL because this sweet flavor can quickly go to your head.
7. Discovery of waterfalls
Come on, let’s go to La Rivière!
Reunion Island hides plenty of treasures in its heart. In particular, beautiful waterfalls with dizzying falls. They flow into pools of clear water (and sometimes very cold in winter). But it is often after a few km of hiking that these treasures present themselves as a small reward for all the effort that we have been able to provide.
Some names of waterfalls:
- Bottle waterfall
- Bridal veil
- Niagara Falls
- Black Hole Basin
- Blue Basin
–
We’ll let you discover why these waterfalls were named like this!
6. Helicopter Tour
Let’s fly!
What could be better than a short helicopter flight to discover the inaccessible beauties of Reunion Island. Flying between the mountains, flying over the beaches… An exceptional experience with packages varying between approximately €210 to €320 for journeys of 30 minutes for the shortest to 1 hour for the longest.
Happiness is priceless and this feeling of happiness will invade you throughout the excursions.
5. Rafting/Kayaking
To the adventure !
There’s something for everyone if you like white water sports, such as rafting, canyoning, kayaking, or RandoAqua. The eastern part of Reunion Island is full of rivers, waterfalls and areas suitable for whitewater aquatic practice.
Adventure, discovery, surpassing oneself, many aspects that we discover through these activities.
4. Piton de la Fournaise
Volcano!
The Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with around 1 eruption per year, it often offers beautiful images of flows and spitting of bright red lava! A real spectacle that the inhabitants of Reunion Island love.
But even in “calm” times the volcano is often visited by hikers, particularly through the sand plain with a few hours of walking, a lunar atmosphere is felt when you approach the craters. It really is another world!
But for the less sporty, it is possible to see and walk on the old flows, which have cooled over time. Located on the St Philipe side (in the south of the island) by the sea with the installation of an ideal viewpoint for beautiful photos with wonderful scenery.
Here we are in the top 3 essential activities to do on Reunion Island:
3. Piton des Neiges
The highest peak on the island!
You can’t go to Reunion Island without going to the highest peak on the island! The Piton des Neiges peaks at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters. Although the route is not the easiest, the end result is well worth the detour.
In the past, we have even been able to witness the appearance of a few light snowflakes during so-called winter periods. Snow on a tropical island? Yes it is possible ! But with or without snow, the Piton des Neiges will dazzle the toughest among us!
2. Whales and dolphins
The beautiful aquatic spectacle!
Reunion Island is, in winter, the scene of a magnificent spectacle offered by whales and in summer it is dolphins who offer us their most beautiful ballets.
Whether on catamarans with friends, or on the big blue with family, it is entirely possible to experience these incredible and unique moments of communication with maritime wildlife.
1. The Circus of Mafate
The essential!
One of the main attractions and arguably the best known is the hike to the Cirque de Mafate. After about 3 hours of more or less grueling walking, this small village in the heart of Reunion Island makes us pause in time.
Far from all technological advances, this little gem offers us a real breath of fresh air and allows us to discover Reunion Island from a completely different angle. The story of the inhabitants of Mafate takes us on a journey to the past and the path back to civilization takes place in a completely different state of mind.
“The intense island” never ceased to thrill us!
You like the paradise islands? Us too, that’s why we made a Top 🙂 to share without moderation!
